Ludwig II

The story of King Ludwig II of Bavaria is extremely interesting, in my opinion at least. Ludwig became king in the age of 18 and he had no political skills but instead he was interested in stories and fairy tales. He liked very much Richard Wagner's operas and sagas and many of them were performed for him in private shows in his own castle because the King did not like public theaters.

Among other castles, Ludwig built the castle of Neuschwanstein, but it was never completed because of his early death in the age of 40. Neuschwanstein is called his "fantasy castle" because of the romantic architecture and the colorful paintings inside of the castle and also partly because in the last years of Ludwig's life he was living in his own fantasy world, isolated from the reality, and he was even considered to be mentally ill.

The pictures are taken from a guide book, but the inside of the castle looked exactly like that. The rooms were as decorated and as colorful as you can see in the pictures.
